IT'S that time of year when we look back at the biggest hits of the past 12 months.
This has been a year of highs and lows in the video games industry but, thankfully, developers and publishers are still churning out quality titles despite the recession.
Here in Ireland, our appetite for all things gaming never seems to be sated.
This week we list Gamezone's top 10 titles of 2009.
1 UNCHARTED 2
The best action and most fun title of the year, Uncharted 2 on the PS3 had it all.
The story was riveting with a great lead character in Drake Fortune (main pic). It looked fantastic, the action flowed freely and players were constantly on guard.
2 CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2
The most anticipated title of the year and by far the most successful in commercial terms, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
talked the talk and walked the walk.
There was huge controversy surrounding a certain 'disturbing' scene but the magnificent multiplayer will be played for years.
3 FIFA 2010
This year was the one where the EA title finally took the bragging rights for gameplay over arch-rival Pro Evolution Soccer.
For the first time in a long time, FIFA boasted not only the licenses for teams, leagues, stadia and kits but also a footballing fluency and accuracy.
4 ASSASSIN'S CREED II
A far more robust title than the first in the series, ACII put players in the role of Ezio Auditore Di Firenzi, a high-flying assassin in Renaissance Italy.
While the game didn't feature any multiplayer options, the sheer wealth of hidden puzzles, treasures and collectables meant for a compelling game.
5 BATMAN: ARKHAM ASYLUM
The Dark Knight was back with a bang and Gotham's gangsters went running for cover. The great story and even better re-imaginings of the characters and villains was a dream for all the Bat fans out there.
6 STREET FIGHTER IV
Street Fighter II will go down in history as one of, if not the, best beat-em-ups of all time.
Street Fighter IV featured the gameplay of its greatest predecessor with the looks of this generation of consoles.
7 TONY HAWK RIDE
The best peripheral of the year goes to the Birdman Tony Hawk. San Diego's favourite son has been at the forefront of skateboarding games for a decade now but the recent release of Ride has given the series a new lease of life.
8 LEFT 4 DEAD 2
There's nothing quite like grabbing a pal for a couple of hours and bashing the brains out of a few zombies.
Left 4 Dead 2 was one of the best multiplayer titles of the year.
9 FORZA MOTORSPORT 3
Tearing up the tarmac has never been so realistic than with the latest Forza titles. The driving physics were greatly improved and new content and customisation features drove this game on.
10 NEW SUPER MARIO BROS (WII)
Those of us that crave a bit of nostalgia from time to time were more than content with this blast from the past.
All the things that used to make gaming so appealing when we were young such as running, jumping, collecting coins and discovering hidden passages in a side-scrolling environment are still as good as all those years ago.
